When can I install my eSIM UPeSIM?

We strongly recommend installing or “downloading” your UPeSIM eSIM before traveling. Indeed, your plan (7, 10, or 30 days) only starts when your eSIM connects to a supported network. This means you can configure everything from home, without worrying about activating your plan too early.

STEP 1 – Install your eSIM before departure

1. Downloading the eSIM

  • Via the UPeSIM app
    • It guides you step by step to install your eSIM.
    • It automatically checks your phone’s compatibility and notifies you via a popup.
    • If needed, you can contact support directly in the “Contact us” menu.
  • By scanning the UPeSIM QR code
    • On iPhone:
      1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan.
      2. Scan the UPeSIM QR code.
    • On Android:
      1. Go to Settings > Network and Internet (or Connections) > Add eSIM / Add Mobile Plan.
      2. Scan the UPeSIM QR code.

2. Checking compatibility

  • A detailed list of compatible devices is available here: UPeSIM – Installation.
  • The UPeSIM app shows a popup indicating if your device is compatible (click “Compatible device list (click here)” on each product page).
  • In general:
    • iPhone: from iPhone XR, XS, XS Max (and later series: 11, 12, 13, 14…).
    • Android: Google Pixel 3 and above, Samsung Galaxy S20 / S21 / S22 / S23, etc.

3. Unlocking your phone

Make sure your smartphone is unlocked (SIM-free) for international networks.

Good to know: As long as the eSIM does not detect a partner network abroad, your UPeSIM plan will not activate. You therefore do not lose any days of validity.

STEP 2 – Prepare your settings before traveling

1. Disable roaming / mobile data abroad on your main line

  • On iPhone:
    1. Go to Settings > Cellular > [Your primary line] > Cellular Data Options and turn off Data Roaming.
  • On Android:
    1. Open Settings > Network and Internet (or Connections), select [Your main SIM card].
    2. Turn off roaming or “Roaming.”

This step avoids any accidental data usage on your usual plan, which can be very expensive abroad.

2. Enable roaming / mobile data abroad on your UPeSIM eSIM

  • On iPhone:
    1. Go to Settings > Cellular > [Your UPeSIM eSIM] > Cellular Data Options and turn on Data Roaming.
  • On Android:
    1. In Settings > Network and Internet (or Connections), select [UPeSIM line].
    2. Enable roaming (Data Roaming).

Your phone will then know that it should use your UPeSIM eSIM for internet access while traveling.

STEP 3 – Upon arrival: select your eSIM for cellular data

1. Choose the UPeSIM eSIM for data

  • On iPhone:
    1. Go to Settings > Cellular.
    2. Under “Cellular Data,” select UPeSIM as your main data line.
  • On Android:
    1. Open Settings > Network and Internet (or Connections > SIM management).
    2. Select UPeSIM as the priority SIM for mobile data.

2. Check the connection

  • Wait a few moments for the eSIM to detect a local partner network.
  • Test the connection by opening a website or an app.
  • Your plan’s validity period (7, 10, or 30 days) will start at this point.
